El Mariachi Restaurante - Cannery Row, Monterey

I flew from straight from Norway into Monterey over the weekend and aside from a pizza delivered practically to my bedside from Dominoes (delicious!) El Mariachi was the very first place I ate at in Monterey. My immediate thoughts? How disappointing!
The first thing you should know is that I'm a really nice critic. I try to find the best and focus on that, but people might follow my recommendations so I can't be too nice when your stomach is at stake.

El Mariachi chimichanga... looks promising... and isn't.

I ordered a chimichanga and it arrived on a generous plate with beans (quite tasty), rice, average, and the usual "poco de pico-de-gallo". The problem? These beautiful chimichangas arrived covered in what could only be described as vegetable soup. In fact, it tasted just like my husband's Russian Granny's borscht. It even had several large fragments of bay leaves, an unpleasant, crunchy, unpalatable surprise lurking in it's vegetable-y depths.

Why, why is there soup on my Mexican food?

If you're going to all the trouble of deep frying something to crispy perfection (and it was, beautifully crisp for a moment), why cover it in some sort of liquid that reduces it to nothing more than a soggy burrito floating in vegetable soup?

The plus side? The view really was quite amazing but the saving grace of this place was the service. Jesus was a delightful, polite and attentive waiter. I would almost come back again just for the service... Almost.

The bottom line? Too much money for low quality food and questionable surroundings.

The details:
Cleanliness: Questionable.
Service: Great.
Price: Way too much.
Military Discount: Yes.
Worth it? Nope.

Still not sure? You can find other reviews for this, and other local restaurants at Trip Advisor.

Bon Appétit!
