The Black Bear Diner - Monterey

The other day I was wondering around Monterey on foot, looking for sustenance after 4 hours of waiting around at the local DMV for a driver's license. I was starved and thus delighted to stumble across a restaurant that looked so invitingly clean!

This charming little theme designer is actually anything but little. Large enough to be an Olive Garden or TGI Friday's, this place is ready to accommodate large, very hungry crowds. The decor is warm and pleasant, laying on the bear theme thickly with carved signs on the walls, cabin-like decor and great exposed wooden beams. One trap that themed/ chain restaurants can always fall into easily is that of culinary mediocrity. Sometimes the theme is the focus, and not the food. This restaurant walked the thin line between the two extremes. The food was good, but not great.
I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich; one of my favorite diner classics composed of bread, mashed potatoes and roast beef all piled high and smothered in gravy. Lets remember that this is a diner, not your grandma's kitchen or a charming, pricy cafe. Everything was of good quality, though the gravy was sadly not from scratch. That said, the portions are HUGE, and after 4 hours at the DMV, the huge platter (it was much too large to be called a plate) of food was more than welcome. Would I order it again? No. But only because I couldn't stop eyeing the amazing looking burgers that the nearby kitchen kept churning out.

On to the staff. They were delightful! My waitress seemed to be one of those rare creatures that enjoys, and therefore excels at table-side service. She was humming as she deftly served tables, and regularly topped off my iced tea with a big smile on her face. The addition of Bing Crosby crooning in the background made the whole experience a pleasant and peaceful one.
I can't wait to come back and try breakfast, which is served all day.

On a side note, I have an odd quirk when I'm at restaurants; I scrutinize the floor a little more than necessary. The places that have carpeted floors can be quite telling. The cleanliness tells you a lot about a restaurant: How old is it? How stained? Was it cleaned up after the morning rush? The carpet here was very clean, most likely newer and showed little of the soil that comes with having just served a large morning crowd. What does this tell me? That the management cares. That cleanliness standards will most likely be kept up throughout the rest of the place as well. Sitting at the bar counter and stealing glances at the kitchen, you could see that this was the case.

The details:
Cleanliness: Very clean.
Service: Perfect.
Price: Great value for huge portions.
Military Discount: Yes.
Worth it? Absolutely!

El Mariachi Restaurante - Cannery Row, Monterey

I flew from straight from Norway into Monterey over the weekend and aside from a pizza delivered practically to my bedside from Dominoes (delicious!) El Mariachi was the very first place I ate at in Monterey. My immediate thoughts? How disappointing!
The first thing you should know is that I'm a really nice critic. I try to find the best and focus on that, but people might follow my recommendations so I can't be too nice when your stomach is at stake.

El Mariachi chimichanga... looks promising... and isn't.

I ordered a chimichanga and it arrived on a generous plate with beans (quite tasty), rice, average, and the usual "poco de pico-de-gallo". The problem? These beautiful chimichangas arrived covered in what could only be described as vegetable soup. In fact, it tasted just like my husband's Russian Granny's borscht. It even had several large fragments of bay leaves, an unpleasant, crunchy, unpalatable surprise lurking in it's vegetable-y depths.

Why, why is there soup on my Mexican food?

If you're going to all the trouble of deep frying something to crispy perfection (and it was, beautifully crisp for a moment), why cover it in some sort of liquid that reduces it to nothing more than a soggy burrito floating in vegetable soup?

The plus side? The view really was quite amazing but the saving grace of this place was the service. Jesus was a delightful, polite and attentive waiter. I would almost come back again just for the service... Almost.

The bottom line? Too much money for low quality food and questionable surroundings.

The details:
Cleanliness: Questionable.
Service: Great.
Price: Way too much.
Military Discount: Yes.
Worth it? Nope.

Who is this Gourmande?

Hello there! This is my first blog post as the Monterey Gourmande and I thought I'd tell you a bit about myself. I have been blogging about a couple of my many passions, sewing and vintage, over at A Few Threads Loose for a few years now. But even more than I love traveling, sewing, and hunting for vintage things, I LOVE to eat.
Every time I tried a new restaurant I found myself composing blog reviews in my head, never to post them anywhere.

Now that I have moved to the lovely Monterey Bay area from cold, rainy Norway (not my original home) I have decided to give it a go. I have eaten great and horrible foods all over the world and can't wait to start talking about food with you!

So what is a Gourmand(e)? Gourmand is the French word for someone who loves to eat. A great gourmand has an open mind and appreciates all kinds of food. Though I love haute cuisine and fancy restaurants, I really enjoy old fashioned diners, hunting for the perfect hamburger, hole in the wall cafes, and a flawless cup of espresso.

On the Monterey Gourmande I plan on writing honest reviews of every restaurant I try, from the non-descriminating perspective of someone who doesn't expect pâté and roses.

Feel free to follow along as I eat my way through the central coast!

Bon Appétit!
